Daniel Price of Clio was recently awarded a certificate for receiving the third highest average in math in his third grade class at Ariton School.
Daniel had a couple of happy parents when school ended.
Brittany Knight, a junior at Dixie Academy and, also, from Clio, was among 350 girls selected to attend Girls State June 8-13 at Troy University.
Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, girls who will become seniors in the next school year are selected to represent their school based on outstanding academic achievements, leadership potential, and school involvement.
On June 13, the girls will meet with Gov. Bob Riley and conduct the assembly’s fifth legislative session in the House and Senate.
Congratulations Daniel and Brittany!

Jackson celebrates 94 years
Alto Loftin Jackson of Clio celebrated his 94th birthday on June 6.  He is proof that people are living longer and healthier lives.
However, many family and friends attest that his enduring years can be attributed to his loving wife of 67 years, Pearl Norton Jackson.
This retired attorney maintains his wit and his inquisitive mind.  He has written several books including “So Mourns the Dove” and “Clio, Alabama, A History.” He continues to be an avid reader to which his daughter, Pearl J. Strawbridge and family presented him the latest memoir by Barbara Walters, “Audition.”
With certainty, their five children can credit their professional success to their parents and their commitment to education. In addition to Mr. Jackson being a retired public litigator, he was also a judge advocate general at the Troy State University campus at Fort Rucker and Mrs. Jackson is a retired educator for the Barbour County school system.
We wish them many more birthdays and anniversaries.

VBS fun
Pastor Roger Miller and vacation Bible school director Jane Moates of Clio Baptist Church continue to celebrate the success of the church’s annual event.
Taking place June 2-5, the Clio Baptist VBS welcomed more than 50 children and volunteers which included teachers and snack providers.  The 2008 theme, Outrigger Island, allowed the “wave riders” (the children) to paddle out to the island (the church sanctuary) each morning as they discovered the “Unshakable Truth” for the day and participated in Bible study. After three waves of the Unshakable Truth which included music class, missions, snacks, recreation, and crafts, the wave riders were treated to a huge inflated water slide on Thursday morning and smaller water activities for younger children. Rev. Miller donned a water bucket filled to the brim for those that were not getting wet enough.
After the decorations were packed away and the final snacks were eaten, Rev. Miller and Ms. Moates were pleased to proclaim that eight children made a pledge of faith.
Ms. Moates stated, “Our mission was to share the good news of Christ to the children.  It appears we succeeded.”
