Rebecca Beasley announced recently that she will seek the office of Clayton mayor again Aug. 26.
According to a recent article in The Clayton Record, Beasley served twice as Clayton mayor and twice on the Clayton town council from 1988-2004.
During her two terms as mayor, Beasley was responsible for securing the $2 million to fund Clayton’s downtown restoration which was recently completed.
If elected, Beasley plans to focus more on economic and recreational development in Clayton.
She plans on forming a committee of town council members, business owners and citizens that would make 20-year goals for Clayton concerning economic development and recreation.
Some of Beasley’s recreational plans for Clayton include a park alongside Clayton’s walking trail and increasing funding to the town’s recreational program.
She also plans to work closely with local economic developers to bring jobs to Clayton.
She would also like to focus on the issue of animal control. She plans to resolve this problem by partnering with the Barbour County Commission in creating an animal control program.
Beasley is the editor of The Clayton Record.
She also helped form a committee responsible for the Governor’s Trail to promote tourism in Barbour County and is also a member of the Octagon House committee.
Beasley said that it was on the urging of Clayton citizens that she decided to seek election for mayor.
“I’ve been encouraged by people in town,” said Beasley.
