Local motorists heading into the Atlanta area might want to re-examine their travel plans. What could be an accident in Troup County, Ga., along Interstate 85 near the Interstate 185 interchange north of LaGrange had traffic in northbound lanes backed up at a standstill for more than five miles shortly after noon CDT.

Road construction on the interstate does begin north of the interchange as the highway runs into Coweta and Meriwether counties.

The Georgia Department of Transportation’s Web site offered no information on the accident or traffic snarl as of 12:45 p.m. Georgia State Troopers, who were working the scene, had not returned phone calls, while the Troup County Sheriff’s office referred any questions to the troopers.
