Medical Center Barbour will host a luncheon in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12 p.m. at the Eufaula Country Club entitled “New Weapons in the War Against Breast Cancer.”

It will feature new diagnostic and treatment options for breast cancer. Cindy Tanton, RN, CEN, CNRN from the Southeast Cancer Center in Dothan will be the guest speaker. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

Approximately 182,460 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2008. Approximately 40,480 women will die from the disease this year. Right now there are about 2 1/2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1-in-8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1-in-35. Breast cancer death rates are going down, which is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and improved treatment. Reservations are required. Seating is limited to 100. RSVP to Chasity Barnes at 334-688-7444.
