It’s time to rally around Relay.

The Barbour County Relay for Life will be held Friday beginning at 6 p.m. at Eufaula High School.

The theme this year is Relay around the World, and 45 teams of local citizens have participated in the annual event.

“To me, Relay is an opportunity for everyone to come out and celebrate survivors and the battles they’ve fought and won,” said 2008 Event Chairman Chris Wortz.

“It’s also an opportunity for family members to remember the ones who lost their battle with cancer.

“The phrase going around is ‘fight back.’ So, it’s also an opportunity for the community to fight back against cancer.”

The night will start with the survivor’s dinner in the EHS cafeteria. The meal is being sponsored by Medical Center Barbour.

Wiregrass Hospice pastorTim Stevenson will give the opening prayer and the Eufaula High School JROTC will post the colors for the night.

Maria Freeman, a 16-year-old cancer survivor, will sing the national anthem, and the guest speaker will be cancer patient Keleigh Gary, a 32-year-old mother with brain cancer.

The event will kick-off at 6 p.m. as the survivors take the first lap around the field.

An extra lap in honor of the EHS Lady Tigers’ state championship win will follow.

Barbour County’s American Idol spin-off, Relay Idol, is on the agenda for this year’s activities.

Kids can pay a $10 entry fee to sing and compete for a Relay prize package.

Entertainment will also be provided by Brandon Barker, the Eufaula All-Star Wildcats, Sara Buffy, Hannah Klages, the Relay band and a another band “At Least Rebecca’s Happy.”

All of these talented entertainers will perform on the newly constructed Relay for Life Stage.

Materials were donated by a local sponsor for the Relay committee to construct a stage.

“We usually have to rent a stage or a flat bed truck to use as the stage,” said Wortz. “We painted it, the whole big monstrous stage, Relay purple, with a sign that says, ‘Follow Me to Relay.’”

Other activities and games will take place throughout the night as the teams race toward their goal of $136,000.

The luminary service will begin soon after dark, and guests to the event can purchase a luminary until 8 p.m.
