Barbour County’s contract for solid waste hauling and garbage service to county residents is under review and will likely be revamped when the county commission considers the subject at their meeting Tuesday.
Commissioners reviewed the garbage service contract with County Engineer Patrick McDougald at their work session in Clayton this week. Finance Committee Chairman Frank Straughn inquired if rising fuel costs were likely to result in higher bids for the county’s garbage service.
This led Chairman Earl Gilmore and commissioners Tripp Horne and Pat Ivey to advise that the county’s contract for garbage service should no longer state that garbage service providers must haul their loads to a landfill in Coffee County.
In other action:
County Administrative Officer Kristi Stell told commissioners that more than 1,000 motor vehicle refund checks have been returned to her office because of incorrect addresses. Stell recommended that a statement be posted at the courthouses and published in area newspapers.
The statement will read: “The Barbour County Commission will be posting a list of Motor Vehicle Refund checks that have been returned due to incorrect addresses. These lists will be posted at the security desk and a copy will be placed in the Probate Judge’s Office at both courthouses. If you feel you are due a refund please check the list.”
Personnel Committee Chairman Fred Cooper advised that a slate of county citizens have agreed to accept appointments to the Fort Benning Regional Growth Management Plan Task Forces.
The committee includes: Land Use and Planning and Quality of Life, Young Johnston; Education (PreK-12), Dr. Barry Sadler; Health Care and Social Services, Ralph Clark; Transportation, Patrick McDougald Infrastructure, Frank Straughn; Public Services, Mike Stell; Housing, Camilla Shamblin; Economic Development, Jim Bradley.
After the meeting was adjourned Gilmore confirmed legislation that would let commissioners vote on a proposed one-cent sales tax increase has been introduced in both the Alabama House and Senate and appears to be on track for approval before the end of the current session. Commissioners will meet Tuesday at 5 p.m. from the Clayton courthouse.
