It’s almost time to vote.
Voters throughout Barbour County will go to the polls June 3 and take part in either the Democratic or Republican primaries. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Candidates are vying for the positions of U.S. Senator, Second District representative to the U.S. House, two places for Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals, President of the Public Service Commission and two Barbour County Board of Education positions.
Three board of education seats will be on the ballot, but one is uncontested. The position of revenue commissioner is also an uncontested race. All local candidates are running as Democrats.Absentee voting is already in progress, says Anna Neville, chairman of the Barbour County Board of Registrars. Voters who are out of town or plan to be out of town during election day can vote on the absentee ballot. The ballot is also available for anyone whose job or work hours would not allow them to vote.
Any residents who are housebound or otherwise incapable of going to the polls June 3 are also encouraged to vote absentee. Those who choose to do so, however, cannot vote at their polling station in June.
The board of registrars has provided a list of registered voters and polling places that is printed in this edition of The Tribune. Barbour County residents who have not registered may do so through May 23 at the Board of Registrars, the Eufaula Carnegie Library, Judge of Probate’s office or the Barbour County Health Department.
An Alabama driver’s license number is required to register.
“If you don’t see your name on the list, call the Board of Registrars,” said Neville. The number for the Eufaula office is 687-1585 and the Clayton office is 775-8579.
Voters who have moved since the last election and who haven’t already contacted the board of registrars should go to their previous polling place to vote. Once there, they can update their information with the board.
In order to vote June 3, registered voters must show some form of identification that bears the voter’s correct name and address. A photo ID is not required. Voters must also choose to vote on the Democratic or Republican ballot in this primary election. Any contests in which there is no clear majority for a candidate will re-appear in the primary run-off election scheduled for July 15.
The party nominees for each position will then be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot where voters will determine a winner.
