I am a blue collar, skilled worker with 19 years of experience at MeadWestvaco.
I am writing out of concern about a crisis that is arising not only on a local level, but national as well. The pending negotiations at MeadWestvaco are representative of a battle that is raging all across the country – one that is putting my job and the very definition of who I am at risk.
The paper industry is my life. Up until the last few years, I took great pride in my work. I considered “Made in the USA with pride” as an honorable motto because I was a part of this great spirit. It was my livelihood. In return, I felt appreciated through competitive, union wages, excellent benefits, and just that simple “thank you.” Morale was high.
Lately, morale is low. We no longer feel appreciated. The American spirit is under attack by corporate greed. Our motto has now become simply “Made in the USA.” As the eyes and ears of this paper mill, we feel as if we are the lifeline of MeadWestvaco.
It can not operate without us, and our knowledge of it is priceless. As our three local union representatives sit at the bargaining table, our worth is questioned and morale plummets. We realize, however, we are not alone as this scenario is being replayed all across the country.
Greed is considered a deadly sin and rightfully so. It will be the death of our country if there is not change. As a blue-collar worker, I can see the problem but do not pretend to have the solution. What I do know is what is going on right before my very eyes. Let’s resurrect the American spirit.
Record profits should equal a record contract.
