Tigers, Eagles familiar foes
No. 1 Eufaula and Booker T. Washington certainly aren’t strangers. The Tigers and the Golden Eagles have been region foes since the Alabama High School Athletic Association made the move from area play to region play in 2000.

Eufaula scores area wins
Eufaula notched its first two wins of the season Tuesday when the Lady Tigers topped Class 5A, Area 3 rivals Rehobeth and Charles Henderson.

Tigers still tops in 5A
Eufaula coaches and players have said all along that they want to live up to their No. 1 ranking. The voters in the Alabama Sports Writers Association obviously felt like the Tigers did that when Eufaula topped a much-improved Dothan squad 13-9 in the season opener.

Brown re-inures knee
Eufaula senior quarterback Zack Brown doesn’t remember exactly what happened. What he does remember is the sharp pain that shot through his right knee and sent him to the ground and ended his night at the 11:47 mark of the second quarter.
Eufaula squeaks out win
It didn’t take top-ranked Eufaula long to figure out it had a fight on its hands Friday night at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers (1-0) managed to squeak out a 13-9 win against Class 6A Dothan (0-1), but not before coach Kevis White’s Tigers gave them a late scare.

No one is going to mistake Barbour County head coach Juan Williams for Bob Dylan, but like the iconic singer/songwriter, Williams can spot change. And “the times they are a-changin’” at Barbour County.
Dothan mystery to EHS
Eufaula head coach Dan Klages and his staff had planned to make the drive up U.S. Route 82 Friday to take in a preseason showdown between Dothan and Jeff Davis. Tropical Storm Fay cancelled their plans. Dothan and Jeff Davis school officials opted Thursday morning to cancel Friday’s game due to the threat of severe weather.

Chiefs, Rebels resume rivalry
Lakeside and Dixie last met on the gridiron Sept. 9, 2005. That night the Chiefs blanked the Rebels 20-0 for their fourth win in a row against their cross-county rival. Friday night the Chiefs will look to make it five in a row, while the Rebels will look to snap their recent skid when the teams resume their rivalry at the Snake Pit in Louisville.

Line play impresses Klages
At Eufaula’s final dress rehearsal before opening its 2008 season, head coach Dan Klages paid particularly close attention to the play of his offensive line. He liked what he saw.

Tigers top Trojans
Eufaula looked the part of the state’s top-ranked team in Class 5A Thursday night. Despite playing without starting quarterback Zack Brown, who was held out of action after injuring his knee in an intra-squad scrimmage Aug. 8, Eufaula topped Lee County (Ga.) 19-6 in a preseason contest at Tiger Stadium.
Experience strength for EHS
What a difference a year can make. Last season, Eufaula head volleyball coach Rebecca Symons had a roster filled with underclassmen. With just three juniors on a team that boasted four sophomores and four freshmen, experience was at a premium. That’s not the case this season.

Bradford leading Lakeside defense
In 1978, Brad Bradford coached his first game as Dixie’s head coach. The Rebels’ opponent that evening just happened to be cross-county rival Lakeside, who went on to win the game 42-7. Thirty years later, Bradford will once again be on the sidelines when the longtime rivals meet. Only this time, the former Dixie head coach will be calling the shots for Lakeside’s defense.

Tigers, Trojans set to tangle
Before the curtain goes up on Eufaula’s 2008 season, the top-ranked Tigers will hold a dress rehearsal at Tiger Stadium. Thursday night, Eufaula will host Lee County (Ga.) in a preseason game. For the first three quarters the teams will play starters and key reserves. The fourth quarter will be played exclusively by the team’s reserves.
Lakeside named camp champs
Lakeside’s varsity cheerleaders began practicing in May with hopes of being named camp champs at the Alabama Independent School Association Cheerleading Championship July 24.

Tigers working to stay on top
One may be the loneliest number, but Eufaula doesn’t seem to mind. Sports writers across the state tabbed Eufaula as the top team in Class 5A heading into the 2008 season. It came as a bit of surprise to the Tigers who finished last season with a 9-3 mark and were bounced from the postseason in the second round.

Tom Clements isn’t a magician. He’s not a con man with a deck of cards on the street corner hustling a few dollars from an unsuspecting passerby. But that doesn’t mean Lakeside’s first-year head coach isn’t going to do his best to pull off a little slight of hand on Friday nights.

Defense dominates scrimmage
Top-ranked Eufaula’s defense stole the show in the team’s opening scrimmage Friday afternoon. In a controlled-scrimmage that lasted just more than an hour, the Tigers’ first-team defense dominated the scout-team offense rarely surrendering more than five yards on a single play.

Harris, Rice named ‘Phenoms’
Eufaula senior Hans Rice’s teammates already referred to him as “The Phenom,” so it’s only fitting that the 6-foot-3, 190-pound linebacker was named as one of Alabama Football Magazine’s 2008 Reebok Alabama Phenoms.

Jags looking to build on 2007
Barbour County head coach Juan Williams led the Jaguars to a school-record 3-7 mark last season. He knows the Jaguars could have just as easily finished the season 5-5.

Tigers top preseason poll
Eufaula head coach Dan Klages considers himself to be a pretty optimistic guy. More times than not he sees the glass half full rather than half empty. But even he didn’t see this coming.
New enthusiasm at Dothan High
Halfway through practice Tuesday, new Dothan head coach Kelvis White stopped the proceedings and ordered players to tuck in the shirts underneath their jerseys.

One thing is certain. When the Lakeside offense takes the field for the first time in 2008, a new quarterback will be under center barking out the signals.
