The Eufaula Dixie Ponytails may be down, but they aren’t out.
“The girls are ready to play,” Eufaula head coach Clayton Adams said. “They’re ready to go and take care of business.”
After dropping a 3-1 decision to Troy Saturday in Ozark in Sub-District 2 play, Eufaula’s business involves staving off elimination and setting up a rematch with Troy, which is undefeated in the tournament after beating Abbeville and Eufaula.
“I feel good about our chances (to beat Troy),” Clayton Adams said. “We had chances to beat them the first time we played them.”
But first Eufaula must score a second victory against Ozark. The teams squared off Monday night in Ozark. Results were not available at press time, but will be published in the weekend edition of the Eufaula Tribune.
Eufaula was bounced into the loser’s bracket by allowing a trio of unearned runs to Troy. Troy only got three runners on base the entire game, but they managed to score all three.
Troy scored two runs in the first inning and one more in the fifth inning.
“We spotted them a couple of runs and then we just couldn’t get anything going,” Clayton Adams said.
“We hung in there with them, but mistakes hurt us.”
Megan Spurlock led the charge at the plate for Eufaula. She collected a double and a single and scored the squad’s lone run.
Mallori Green had the team’s only RBI.
She laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Spurlock.
Kristen Thomas had a double in the loss and George Anne Whitehead picked up a single.
“We just didn’t do much offensively,” Clayton Adams said.
“We were able to get some runners on base, but Troy did a great job of making sure we didn’t score them.
“I’ve been coaching for a while now, and that’s the best fielding team I’ve ever seen.
“They just didn’t make any mistakes.”
Eufaula scored a 12-3 win against Ozark in its tournament opener.
Spurlock paced Eufaula at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort that included a double, three RBI and a two runs scored.
Angel Long was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, while Madison Adams and Chelsea Jones were each 2-for-3. Madison Adams also stole five bases and scored three runs.
Jones stole two bases, knocked in two runs and scored two more.
Cheyenne Ingram smacked a triple and Green collected a double in the win.
Spurlock, Jones and Madison Adams combined to limit the Ozark offense to just three runs.
“It was a solid effort all around,” Clayton Adams said. “Everyone hit the ball, and we got good pitching from all three of our pitchers.”
